Aerotek Services Utilizes Onsite Leadership to Support Customer's Installation Project

The Challenge

Our customer's facility in Pontiac, IL was experiencing attendance problems within their skilled machinist workforce. Additionally, the customer was in the process of installing newly commissioned machines and removing older equipment. This increased the demand for skilled machinists and posed challenges for maintaining support and leadership for a 24/7 operation.

The Solution
                Aerotek's manufacturing support team assumed production management of six machines, comprised of three mills and three hones. In two weeks, a team of 21 skilled machinists were identified and employed to operate these machines continuously. This team included three experienced machining supervisors responsible for overseeing production schedules and ensuring sufficient coverage across all machines and shifts. The supervisors managed the performance, adherence to safety protocols and work schedules of the machinist team, ensuring that daily production targets were achieved and providing daily production reports to internal and client leadership. Furthermore, they supervised on-the-job and cross-training opportunities for the machinist team.

The Outcome

Within four months, Aerotek's manufacturing support team achieved significant improvements in production output. Aerotek successfully machined a substantial quantity of fuel injector parts, resulting in a marked increase compared to the previous production levels. Aerotek's workforce averaged 1,116 parts machined weekly and surpassed the weekly production schedule coverage KEY Performance Indicator (KPI) of 85%.

Worker and workplace safety were key focal points, and Aerotek conducted routine safety meetings with our workers. These meetings helped the team identify potential safety concerns like lockout/tagout procedures, hand safety, proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and more. By placing a strong focus on safety, the project was completed without a single injury.

Furthermore, the implementation of improved supervisory support led to enhanced timekeeping, attendance and mentorship -- proving more effective than having working leads who were also responsible for production. Enhanced project management was achieved through supervisors handling daily reports, safety minutes and attendance, resulting in a more professional and organized operation. This dedicated supervisory model allowed for increased production efficiency, enabling our client to achieve better production outcomes and reduce timekeeping issues.
